1938 Indian Sport Scout

This 1938 Indian Sport Scout motorcycle (FDA) is a pedigreed motorcycle from the Harry V Sucher collection, Harry V Sucher. Harry’s main avocation which he pursued all his life was finding, restoring, and riding antique motorcycles. He wrote the definitive histories of the Indian and Harley – Davidson motorcycles and has been called the foremost American motorcycle historian. He was one of the early members of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America, SoCal Chapter.

Harry authored The Iron Redskin and he considered the 1938 production model Indian motorcycles the best of the Indian production line. This Indian Sport Scout 45 motorcycle is written about and pictured in his books. This origin of this project bike is unknown. Harry got the parts to Johnny Eagles and asked him to build the bike. It was a mismatch of parts and Harry wanted it to be of 1938 design to match his other bikes. Close inspection reveals a 1940 motor in a 1941 frame dressed up with 1938 sheet metal and colors. Johnny Eagles says the build of the time was not as specific to the manufactures specs as is attempted today. This motorcycle was also built internally with some of Johnny’s magic and he swears that there is not a Chief around from the day that could stay with this Scout. This is a very strong motorcycle! The bike was originally restored by Johnny Eagles in the late 1970’s. The family has had this bike in storage prior to Harry’s passing in 2009. Johnny Eagles has just completed a service and tune-up of this fine motorcycle and it is ready for riding and show by its next curator.

Mileage: Working speedometer indicates 13279 total miles on the restoration. 50 miles applied since the Eagles tune-up.

Paint: The original restoration paint and striping by Johnny Eagles has held up well. Excellent quality and great sheen. Paint polished right up and has a few chips from road use, especially on the luggage rack. This is near perfect paint with minimal flaws.

Sheet metal: Sheet metal is original material and of excellent fit and finish. Minimal dings if any.

Chrome: Minimal chrome but well done and bright and shiny.

Tires and Rims: Tires are early production Dunlop Gold 400 X 18 fitted on a painted rim with Cadmium spokes. Minimal miles showing on the tread.

Mechanical: This engine is mechanically sound with an original rebuild/restoration by Johnny Eagles. Johnny put some of his magic in this motor in the original build and this Scout is a power monster! Johnny has just re-tuned the engine and his test rides brought up some fun memories. This is a first kick, mag powered start and it runs flawlessly through the gears. This machine is magneto powered with a generator and battery to supply the lights.

    1940 Indian Chief

    40-chief-025

1940 Indian Chief w/1947 engine.  Export model w/ metric speedometer from British Columbia.  3 year restoration with 37 break in miles. . . .This Indian Chief was purchased in Oregon in 2010 but leaked everywhere it could. Owner took the bike apart, sent the motor and trany to Kiwi and he did the remainder of the work. Very nicely done!

Complete history is unknown.  Engine has brass emblem from “Otto Dragers Motorcycles, Seattle WA.”  Otto opened his first dealership in 1935 and his grandson is still in business.  He was a racer and specialized in police contracts in the northwest.  He had a buyback program and rebuild and sell old bikes.  His rebuilds had brass emblems on the engines.  He founded the Jolly Rodgers MC club which sponsored races and the club is active today.

The cost of restoration far exceeds what this bike will sell for.  Too many knee operations have made it hard for the owner  to kick over this bike.  But it is really fun to ride. and a real eye catcher especially with the non Indian paint color and finishing fit.

Mileage: 37 miles on the restoration. Bike needs to be ridden in correctly.

Paint: All sheet metal rebuilt by expert body man w/ 45 years experience.  Tanks and fenders are original.  Gun metal finish is not a factory color

    Sheet metal:

Frame was sand blasted and a bad arc weld repair to the clutch casting was found.  Arc weld repair on a brass brazed frame is prohibited.  Frame was sent to Jeff Grigsby @ Indian Motor Works, the best Indian frame man there is.  Frame was jig straightened and another clutch casting from a 1940 frame was brass brazed in.  Frame was powdered coated and all new bushings pressed in.  All other parts were powdered coated and exhaust was ceramic coated.

Chrome: All brite work has been nickel plated

    Tires and Rims:

New 450 x 18 tires and tubes. Wheels and drums powder coated and spokes cad plated

    Mechanical:

Engine was overhauled by Mike Thomas of Kiwi Indian.  Built to stock specs including new flywheels.  Old flywheels would not balance to his specs. This motor needs to be broken in correctly for 500 miles. All internals were replaced and the final parts list is 4 pages long with a cost of $11,200. Paperwork goes to the new owner. Motor was broken in by Kiwi on his engine stand.

TITLE:  Clean, clear, and Restored 1940 CA. plate registered to the bike

    Engine #          CDG7829

    Frame #           3401624

NADA:  Nada would rate this bike as a low 2 because of the color and motor differences.

Accessories:  original shift knob, chummy seat, crash bars and luggage rack.  Also, aftermarket mirror, light switch, fender light, tools, manuals, receipts and photos.

    1952 Honda Dream E

    image

Super rare 1952 Honda Dream E located at our shop in Japan. I have never seen one of these bikes for sale before. This bike came from a private collection in Japan. Bike was restored at one time. Included with the bike will be a new set of handlebar grips and the glass petcock bowl. The ignition switch, horn, and the rear push bar are missing. The original seat pad is under the seat cover. It is not in good condition, but it’s original. We have not started the bike. The engine turns over fine. There is a crack on the engine cover around the kick starter “see pictures”. This is a common problem with these bikes. Also, the kick starter return spring is not working.
